I know the Christmas season is upon us because just this week I got teary eyed and emotional while watching the annual commercials on TV by Hallmark and Folgers coffee.
Christmas brings that nostalgia and a longing to be surrounded by family, so much that people will travel long distances at great expense and energy to get "home." Why is that you suppose?
Today's society runs here and there, sometimes visiting three homes in one day, not able to stay long at any one place nor eat much after the first stop.
What draws us home? Why do we make such an effort? Why is it so important? Why are we depressed if we are alone on that one day?
I don't have all the answers, but I do believe it has something to do with our very souls.
We each have a void that can only be filled by God. We try to fill the "hole" with "stuff" thinking the new house, the new car, designer clothes, or hundreds of other "things" will satisfy. It doesn't work. Nothing fits that empty space except the love of God. It is a God sized void. We will never know true peace and fulfillment without Him.
But we are so busy with the thought of what Christmas should be that we miss what Christmas really is; the joy that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall be saved." John 3:16
Joseph and Mary had to travel a long distance to reach their city of Bethlehem. Is there more to that journey than we understand? Is that what's behind our need to reach home?
Why do we tirelessly shop for the perfect gift for our loved ones? Could it be because God loves us so much He gave us the perfect Gift? Are we unconciously trying to recapture all these things that surround Christmas?
I think our hearts and souls are longing to reach our home God has prepared for us in Heaven. Our earthly family and homes are tangible and what we understand. The sad part is that too many have no clue why they long for such things.
The song tells us "Go tell it on the mountain", so that is what I'm doing with my feeble attempt this morning via this blog page.
Jesus Christ draws us unto Him. Let's not leave Him out of CHRISTmas. Accept His perfect Gift.
